Decoupaged trays

I found a pair of lovely IKEA KLACK trays in my new studio apartment storage space above the closet. Finders keepers, right? They were a little bit dirty and after some cleaning turned out okay. But I wanted better. So I went to Joann's with boo and picked out some fabric that was $4/yd! I don't have any photos of the process because I was too excited to get started. But I followed the same general directions as my coasters DIY. I laid the fabric out and ironed it, placed the trays on top and cut it out with a little bit of extra just to be safe. I Mod Podged the white area of the tray, about an inch at a time, placing the fabric down over it and smoothing it out. When I completed gluing the fabric down, I let it dry for a little while, before mod podging the top. I let that dry and did a few more coats. I ended up picking up some glossy mod podge to give it a glossy finish.
It didnt come out as glossy as I'd wanted,  so I gave it another coat of matte finish mod podge. It was still pretty shiny, but I was hoping for glass like shiny. I guess in order for that I'd have to have a piece of glass cut to fit.  But we use one in our bathroom and one under our coffee table, and they serve their purpose for another affordable, cute project.

Here's the final result :

DIY: How to make your own drink coasters!

It's been a while since I have been able to post. Boo and I moved into a new apartment, I have been preparing for entering Grad School and moving a few of my things into a tiny studio the next city over, & we went on vacation. I found some time to craft in between- I decoupaged my little butt off. First things first, I'll show you how I made some beautiful coasters with some fabric and cork coasters from home depot.

Oil Pulling

I read an interesting article on One Good Thing By Jillee about OIL PULLING and I wanted to try it. Oil Pulling is swishing around a bit of oil in your mouth for a little while each day or a few times a week. It is supposed to be beneficial for oral health and can even whiten teeth. There are a bunch of different oils you can use to do this, but I chose to use virgin coconut oil. The extra virgin has a more mild taste, so feel free to try that kind as well. It was so ungodly hot these past few days that our coconut oil was completely melted, and the jar was super hard to open, but it was worth it! I put about a tablespoon of it in my mouth and started swishing, sort of as if it were mouthwash, but not TOO intensely, or your mouth will hurt! Jillee's article suggests 20 minutes at a time, but I didn't get that much quiet time, so I did about 10 minutes the first time, and a bit longer the next time. When I was finished, I spit it out in the trash (coconut oil is a solid under certain temps & it could clog the pipes). I could already feel that my mouth felt cleaner, and I brushed my teeth for good measure. Oil pulling is something that sounds a bit strange - swishing oil can lead to a cleaner mouth?? But after doing it for af ew days so far, my mouth feels super clean, and I will keep doing it. It's not gross- I swear!coconut oil tastes really good (if you like coconut) and it gets the nasty stuff out. Sounds good to me. Check out Amazon for coconut oil, they have some good deals and you can save money by subscribing to a purchase.

Waterproofing works!

canstockphoto.com

I've been seeing the pins all over pinterest, and I have even seen it on tv. Waterproof your canvas shoes with beeswax and a hair dryer! Boo was given a bit of beeswax from a coworker to make his own moustache wax, so I asked him to save me a piece so I can waterproof my super cool awesome canvas sneakers from Gap! He finally got around to trying to make it yesterday, so I of course grabbed my piece and went to work on my project.  i didn't take any pictures during, but it is very straightforward. You rub the piece of beeswax all over the spots that you want to be waterproofed, and heat it up with your hair dryer. I was worried that I hadn't done it correctly, because it wasn't really doing anything, but once it gets hot hot hot enough (to burn your fingers!) you will see the beeswax melting into the material, and it will feel smooth instead of sticky.

After waterproofing

Of course I had to play.... sprinkled some water on them and it beaded right up! I definitely won't be afraid to wear these on a rainy day. No more wet feet!

If you like these shoes you can buy them from ebay here or check your local Gap store because they are no longer available online (& mine were on sale!)

I'm trying to make blazers happen

Blazers

Mango jacket
$67 - mango.com

Vero moda
$51 - veromoda.com

As it's summer and hot as balls, blazers are on sale. The pink one from Gap above was in my local store -in my size- for $15.97 (final sale) with an additional 40% off sale items. It needs a small alteration, moving the buttons over just slightly . But for $10 I think that is totally doable!
